Shoemaking

2009 to 2015 and hopefully ongoing

Stemming from a total back-to-basics pivot in 2009 where I decided I needed more analog frustration in my life to counter balance the computer screens I stared out for 50 hours a week in my day job, I studied shoemaking at RMIT and spent a few years relishing the chance to make shoes for friends and customers.

By far the most complicated skillset I have ever tried to grasp, making shoes was a dreamy time where I was challenged with technical requirements but also entirely justified in reading fashion magazines for hours as “research”. I made many mistakes, fashion tragedies, and oddities, but I also had the chance to make many beautiful shoes for even more beautiful clients.

This side of my life is all on-hold at the moment, but I will return one day to the scent of leather and the pain of hammering my thumb at least once a day.
